About the Scholarships

The purpose of athlete scholarships is to enable emerging and talented New Zealand athletes' to concurrently pursue tertiary and vocational qualifications while pursuing excellence in sport.
The Programme supports fees up to $10,000 and a living allowance of up to $4,000 per year to successful scholarship recipients.
Gold Level Scholarship are available to high performance athletes who have retired or been de-carded.
2012 Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria:
- Be capable of impacting Sport NZ's High Performance mission "More Kiwi winners on the world stage".
- Be endorsed by their National Sports Organisation (NSO).
- Have read the Programme Guide (DOC, 194 Kb).
- Have met all previous scholarship requirements.
2012 Selection Criteria
Applications will be assessed and prioritised by a selection panel. The selection criteria are listed below (as outlined in Schedule 1 of the Programme Guide (DOC, 194 Kb)):
- Level 1 & 2 carded athletes. Rugby and Cricket will have up to 20 scholarships allocated per sport.
- Level 3 and 4 carded athletes.
- Athletes receiving Performance Enhancement Grants (PEGs).
- Athletes identified through high performance investment to have the potential to impact Sport NZ's High Performance mission
- Athletes who are likely to become carded within the next six months and have been identified in their NSO High Performance pathway (where applicable) and as agreed with HPSNZ and Sport NZ.
What qualifications are eligible?
Athletes may enrol in any tertiary or vocational qualification that appears on the New Zealand Register of Quality Assured Qualifications.
This includes most university and polytechnic qualifications, teaching courses and trade courses. The education provider must be a New Zealand organisation.
How do I apply for a scholarship in 2012?
Applications can be submitted online between 1 November and 1 December 2011. You will need to:
- Discuss your application with your NSO, Coach, Performance Planner and/or Athlete Life Advisor.
- We recommend previewing a Draft Application (DOC, 54 Kb) before submitting your online application.
Written notification on the outcome of your application will be provided by High Performance Sport New Zealand by 24 December 2011.
Receiving payments
Fees are paid directly to the relevant education provider. Athlete living allowances are direct credited to the athlete's bank account.
Scholarship requirements
- Pass all your papers/courses.
- Submit your Six-Month Progress Report (due 1 July and 1 December each year).
- Attend an anti-doping seminar in the first year the scholarship is awarded.
- Meet any tax and income declaration requirements.
Six Month Progress Report
All 2011 scholarship recipients are requied to submit a Six-Month Progress Report due 1 July and 1 December.
